The Beginnings of a Tutorial...

When does a project become a tutorial?

When the artist creating it is also a writer!

AND they want to share some creative ways to make one-of-a-kind art for yourself!

Oh I know, there are lots of people making videos about what they are working on.

However, unless they have written down an outline and really mapped out the steps, there can be a lot of details left out of a video. That can cause more confusion than clarity. Video makers often assume that everyone knows this step or that step. Videos also have a time limit for what people can endure in a sitting, plus rewinding to an exact spot isn't always easy.

Disclaimer: I don't want to knock all videos, some are really well done and a great boon to teaching. It's just not my best experience or desire to stare at a screen for a long time. I do think they are helpful for quick tips and details for construction on difficult steps.

While learning methods are about personal preference, and access to certain tech, it is easier for me to write it out from start to finish. Writing forces the writer to really examine the processes for making something and work to explain it clearly and concisely.

Not easy!

Writing is about taking an exciting project and guiding someone thru the steps to creating it themselves with all of the details and possibilities captured in images and words so (hopefully) nothing is left out.

THIS TAKES A LOT OF TIME! And multiple rewrites and editing with different sets of eyes on it to get it as good as it can be.

The best thing about a written tutorial? It can be opened and used, put aside for a while, opened again, turned back to the beginning, and notes made on it at any spot in the pages and saved either by printing it out or stored in your own device to access ANYTIME!

Which is why I love actual books. And why I am a writer. And why I am working on a new tutorial for YOU!
